CLEANINGS

A dental cleaning is a professional cleaning you receive from a dentist or dental hygienist. Most dental cleanings take only between 30 minutes to an hour. Cleanings should be performed every six months to prevent excessive plaque buildup that leads to cavities and gum disease. They are highly effective in preventing cavities and gum disease.

Who is a candidate for a dental cleaning?

At Day Dental Implants and Dentures, we recommend patients come in for a cleaning and exam twice a year. Maintaining good dental hygiene between regular cleanings prevents serious dental issues from developing. Everyone is a candidate for dental cleaning, as plaque and tartar buildup occur on the teeth despite regular and thorough brushing and flossing.

What causes plaque and tartar buildup?

Plaque is a thin film of bacteria that builds up on your teeth. This layer can harden and turn into tartar, which can't be removed by brushing. Plaque and tartar buildup can also cause gingivitis, which is inflammation of the gums. It's often paired with red, swollen gums that bleed easily. Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease, but it can be serious if left untreated.

How often should dental cleanings be performed?

While patients should attend regular checkups and cleanings, some patients may require more frequent cleanings than others. Patients who are prone to gum disease, have diabetes, take certain medications, or smoke may require more frequent dental cleanings in order to maintain good oral health. In ideal cases, dental cleaning would be required once every six months.

Dental cleanings and good oral hygiene

Good oral hygiene habits like brushing and flossing are an important part of preventing dental problems like gum disease. These habits help to remove plaque from the mouth, which is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth every day. Plaque can eventually harden into tartar if you don't remove it, which is difficult to remove on your own. Even worse, plaque and tartar buildup can cause cavities and gum disease.

When the dentist cleans your teeth, they are removing plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth through ultrasonic cleaning, helping to prevent further dental problems in the future. Whether you have your teeth cleaned every six months or every three to four months, it's important to maintain regular cleanings with your dentist.
