A dental crown is an artificial restoration that is placed over a tooth that is decayed or cracked. Dental crowns are made of porcelain or ceramic, or a metal alloy. The crown not only restores the tooth’s shape but also its function. Nowadays, crowns are made from aesthetically pleasing materials, making them difficult to notice.
What are the different types of dental crowns?
There are various types of dental crowns, but some of the most common ones are porcelain, ceramic, and porcelain-fused-to-metal. Porcelain dental crowns are made of high-quality porcelain and are the most natural-looking crown option. The porcelain is tinted to match the natural color of your smile. Metal crowns are also used in some cases for the molars or premolars, which provide excellent durability and strength.
What are the advantages of dental crowns?
- Crowns cover damaged or severely worn out teeth
- They protect fragile teeth that may have undergone root canal therapy
- They improve the aesthetics of a person’s smile
- They are impressively long-lasting, provided you care for them well.
Dental Crowns Procedure
The dental crown process typically takes about two appointments. At the first appointment, we’ll prepare the tooth and take a digital impression. Next, we’ll place a temporary crown on the tooth, which will have to be worn for about three weeks while the custom crown is fabricated in a dental lab.
Once the permanent crown is fabricated, we will remove the temporary restoration from the tooth and clean it. The surface of the crown will be roughened using an etching solution, after which we will place the permanent crown on it and bond it with dental adhesives. A bite test will be taken to ensure a perfect bite.
